Proverbs
Chapter One
1. Prosperity solicits jealous looks, but charity brings forth praise.
2. An envious person delights in hearing gossip, but a person of integrity smells the stench and rebukes the slanderer.
3. The rich despise the poor, and the poor are jealous of the rich.
4. A person who is quick to condemn a transgressor, yet fails to examine his own heart is condemned himself.
5. The proud person thinks everyone adores him, but the humble esteems his fellows above himself.
6. Who is perfect among the sons of Adam? All have lost their way, and all have corrupted themselves. Even the hearts of the elect are not perfected.
7. A person of truth and understanding will confess his faults, but the wicked brag of their righteousness.
8. The self-righteous person despises the confession of the poor, but the humble pray for the wicked.
9. A righteous person laments over his sin. The proud person says, ‘What have I done?’
10. Jehovah sees the tears of those who mourn, and Jehovah will surely bring the proud to account.
11. Jehovah has compassion for those who suffer, and Jehovah records all the deeds of the oppressor.
12. The servants of Jehovah will rejoice when they see the Lord descend, but the wicked will be filled with terror.
13. The good and the bad alike know Jehovah is the judge of the earth. The wise tremble but the foolish have no fear.
14. The judgments of the Lord are just and true; who is able to stand before Him?
15. A righteous man lends to the poor and expects nothing in return. But a wicked man sees charity as an investment.
Chapter Two
1. Jehovah is full of mercy, confess your lawless deeds, therefore, and He will forgive your sins.
2. Jehovah is the light, cease, then, to act falsely and He will establish you.
3. Jehovah’s ways are righteous, turn again, therefore, and He will justify you.
4. A person who shows no mercy will receive no mercy from the Lord.
5. A person who walks in darkness will himself stumble and fall into Hades.
6. A person whose ways are crooked will himself be defrauded of life.
7. Hear, then, you peoples of all nations: God who created the heavens, the worlds, and all that is in them, calls you out of darkness to light, from vanity to that which shall profit your souls.
Chapter Three
1. Those who show mercy shall themselves receive mercy.
2. If a calamity has befallen your friend, you will supply his needs. Do likewise for those who hate you.
3. You will, rightly, weep with loved ones in their sorrow. A righteous man will comfort his enemies in their distress also.
4. Praise the Lord when He blesses you, and pray for your enemies when they plunder your possessions.
5. A good man receives no recognition, and a wicked man is continually praised. But Jehovah sees the deeds of both and judges in righteousness.
6. There is one who delights in seeing the poor beg for mercy. But the righteous has forgiven when he sees him coming afar off.
7. Let the fear of the Lord cause you to walk in righteousness, and leave the judgment of the wicked in the Lord’s hands.
Chapter Four
1. Knowledge is the key to understanding, and by it comes wisdom.
2. Never refuse instruction, for by it comes knowledge and understanding. Seek out, therefore, wise councilors.
3. Only a fool wishes to remain ignorant; he will perish because of it. Therefore, desire knowledge and live.
4. What does God require? Who shall be our advocate? When shall He stand upon the earth? Such knowledge is for the diligent.
5. Listen carefully to your elders and eat all their words; for knowledge excites the mind and nourishes the soul.
6. Everyone has gone astray and rejected the knowledge of the Lord; there are none who seek His law for they love their evil ways. Yet Jehovah has reserved a remnant of the sons of man for Himself.
7. Do not despise the poor or refuse to entertain the stranger. Rather, take them into your house and share the knowledge of the Lord. For by it the poor become rich and the stranger is brought near.
8. Great and boundless is the knowledge of the Lord. Seek out the Lord and He will impart understanding.
9. Enlighten me, O Lord, with words of instruction. Grant me knowledge that I may instruct the foolish.
Chapter Five
1. A proud man pretends to know all the ways of the Lord. But Jehovah gives wisdom and knowledge to the humble.
2. Humility is a door to greater knowledge. But a proud man seeks only praise.
3. A man whose ways are perfect in his own eyes walks in error. But his knowledge increases when he surrounds himself with wise councilors.
Chapter Six
1. The Lord gives understanding to those who acknowledge His word.
2. Do you hear the voice of fools? They say, “We have heard the word of the Lord but we do not believe it.”
3. Those who acknowledge the word of the Lord seek life. Those who despise His word will find death.
Chapter Seven
1. Sin stands at the door and says, “Will you not invite me in once more?”
2. Her face is the fairest of women and she is adorned with expensive clothes and sweet smelling perfume.
3. She is seductive: she lowers her head, smiles sweetly, flutters her eye-lids, and flatters with her lips.
4. She promises a night of passion that has never known before and will never be known again.
5. I saw two men. The first was called Wisdom and he said, “Your beauty is an illusion and your clothes are filthy rags. You have no charm and all your words are lies.” He slammed the door in her face and she went on her way.
6. The second was called Fool and he said, “You are the fairest of all maidens and I perceive that your love for me is great. Let us retire to my quarters and fill our cups to the brim with the sweet wine of love.” He was dead when she left at sunrise.
7. A wise man is not deceived by the beauty and flattering words of a harlot. But a fool gladly invites her in and sups her poisoned wine.
Chapter Eight
1. What dwells within the heart of man? Who can understand its operations?
2. A man can conceal the desires of his heart from others but he may also deceive himself and be unaware!
3. The hypocrite puts on a show but not everyone is fooled.
4. Do you want to know the heart of a man? Listen to his words and observe his deeds.
Chapter Nine
1. A man who fails to rule his house is a coward; grief and regret shall be his portion.
2. The rod is better than a thousand rebukes, and praise is better than anger.
3. Do you love your children? Then do not fail to discipline them.
4. A father laments over his wayward son, and a mother is shamed by an indecent daughter. They cry, “Lo, they were corrupt in the womb, and rebellion was in their hearts from birth.” Such are the cries of a cowardly father and selfish mother.
Chapter Ten
1. The universe was born out of love, and by it the world is sustained.
2. A man’s transgression brings death but love redeems him from the grave.
3. A husband who loves his wife will win her devotion, and a devoted wife will win her husband’s love.
4. Obedient children are a father’s glory, but their rebellion brings shame to their mother.
Chapter Eleven
1. Call on Jehovah in the day of your distress and He will answer you, and you shall know that He is the Lord.
2. Give thanksgiving at all times and let your heart continually praise His name.
3. Through His precepts and the offering of my lips, I have come to know the Lord. But the ungodly do not know His name.
Chapter Twelve
1. I hear your words and rejoice, but I despise the voice of fools.
2. I see the beauty of Zion and rejoice, but I will set no wicked thing before my eyes lest my heart is corrupted.
3. I taste the goodness of the Lord and rejoice, but I will refuse the delicacies of the ungodly.
4. I handle the holy things and my heart leaps for joy, but I will touch no unclean thing.
5. I smell the sweet incense and my heart rejoices, but the deeds of the wicked are an offence to my nostrils.
Chapter Thirteen
1. The Lord has created the day and he knows all its ways beforehand.
2. The godly rise early to worship but the slothful turn in their sleep.
3. A godly woman rises before dawn to manage her house, but the house of the wicked is disorderly.
4. The lazy man rises at noon and, from his window, watches the good man ploughing.
5. The children of the wicked beg for food in the streets, but the godly feast on the fruits of their labour.
6. The Lord blesses the labor of the godly, but the lazy man brings poverty upon himself and causes his house to mourn.
Chapter Fourteen
1. The word of the Lord is food for the soul and our guidance in the way. He who seeks the right path shall find it, and he who hungers shall be full.
2. An evil man rejects the instruction of the Lord but a good man walks in His commandments.
3. Those who walk in the instruction of the Lord shall not want, but the ungodly labor in vain.
Chapter Fifteen
1. God posses all power and strength, so who is able to withstand Him? God posses all knowledge and wisdom, so what plans can men or angels devise to thwart Him? God fills the heavens, so who is able to hide from His presence?
2. In you, Oh Lord, we seek refuge. In you, Oh Lord, we seek instruction. In you, Oh Lord, we seek guidance.
3. Those that put their trust in the Lord shall not be disappointed, but the heathen fumble around in the darkness and fall into Hades.
4. The Lord watches over them who trust in His name, but the idols of the heathen are a stumbling block to them.
Chapter Sixteen
1. The wicked are as numerous as grains of sand on the shore, and the righteous as rare as pearls.
2. The Lord upholds the righteous and the wicked are preserved where the saints dwell in their midst.
3. As salt on meat stays decay, so godly men in the world delay destruction.
4. Behold, the Lord’s wrath cannot be restrained forever, nor His vengeance abated indefinitely - a day has been appointed. Angels shall gather the sons of righteousness and stand them on the clouds, and then unleash His anger and pour the bowls of His wrath on the sons of disobedience.
5. The righteous will shine as the stars but the wicked shall be no more.
Chapter Seventeen
1. The Lord is pure light and in Him there is no darkness.
2. The heavens have been purged; the angels have been cast down. Eden has been purged; man has been driven out.
3. God created paradise and there brought forth a man from the dust of the ground. But through one transgression he fell and sin blighted the world.
4. Can God dwell among men? Can man inhabit the dwelling place of God?
Chapter Eighteen
1. The righteous shall dwell in the land of Eden and partake of the tree of life. But the wicked shall reap the reward of their transgressions and dwell in darkness forever.
2. Do you know the end of the wicked? Do not let your heart be glad, do not let your lips rejoice, and do not lift your hands in joy. Does not God mourn the death of the wicked?
3. As a father rejoices over a rebellious son who repents, so the Lord rejoices over the sinner who turns from his wickedness.
Chapter Nineteen
1. All Your words are truth and I have sought them diligently from the days of my youth.
2. Your will is made known through Your words and I have studied them in earnest day and night.
3. Your words have gone abroad in all the earth and Your righteousness made known to all the nations.
5. Your words are my righteousness and I rejoice to walk in them.
Chapter Twenty
1. The king does not know God, and the people have gone astray.
2. The princes know not justice and mercy, and the hearts of men plan rebellion.
3. The officials prosper through bribery, and the whole land is corrupt.
4. Let us seek the Lord and turn from our idols. Let us show mercy and walk in His ways. Let us deal honestly and delight in truth.
5. For the Lord has seen all our evil doings and His judgements are near. Hear, then, the voice of His servant and avert the disaster that is certain otherwise.
Chapter Twenty-One
1. Pride has filled your heart because of your learning and the works of your hands.
2. Arrogance has become your way and you despise the meek and the humble.
3. Envy consumes you and your contemporaries have become your rivals.
4. You have sown wickedness and so you have reaped misery; this is your judgment. Yet know for certain that there is yet a greater judgment.
Chapter Twenty-Two
1. Peace and harmony is the fruit of contentment but envy produces bitter disputes wherein is cursing and violence.
2. As surely as a twisted nose brings forth blood, so jealousy will manifest itself in words and deeds.
3. Sadness is in the heart of the man who covets that which is beyond his reach. But praise and rejoicing are on the lips of the contented.
4. Pride and humility can no more dwell together than water and oil. Likewise, the rich and poor are separated by greed and jealousy.
Chapter Twenty-Three
1. Those who declare their ignorance find understanding but wisdom eludes the proud.
2. A wise man seeks understanding in the word of the Lord but fools remain ignorant.
3. Those who diligently study gain understanding but a lazy man will die for lack of wisdom.
4. A man of learning is known by his understanding and the foolish by their folly.
5. Let those who desire understanding diligently study the precepts of the Lord, and let those with wisdom walk in His ways.
Chapter Twenty-Four
1. My sons and daughters, choose your friends wisely in the days of your youth, for they shall determine the way you go.
2. A good friend rejoices with you in the praise of God but a bad friend fills your heart with violent thoughts.
3. A bad friend entices you to do evil but a good friend prevents you from sinning against the Lord.
4. A good friend praises you when you speak words of wisdom but a bad friend laughs when you cuss and blaspheme.
5. Good friends will rejoice with you in the days of joy that lay ahead but all the wicked together will despair in the futility of their lives.
6. The Lord knows all your thoughts, He hears every word that comes out of your mouth, and He observes all your deeds.
7. Seek, then, friends who meditate on God’s word, friends who delight in edification and friends who are zealous in good works. For you are not unaware of the reward awaiting the righteous and you not ignorant of the punishment prepared for the wicked.
Chapter Twenty-Five
1. Who is wiser than the one who already has understanding? Why should a man seek understanding when he has already attained wisdom?
2. The man who is wise in his own eyes lacks understanding, and the man who has understanding in his own eyes lacks wisdom.
3. There is one who speaks wisdom to others but behaves like a fool, and there is one who imparts knowledge to others but conducts himself without understanding.
4. It is easier to give instruction than to seek it, and it is easier to rebuke than to heed admonition.
Chapter Twenty-Six
1. You alone, O Lord, possess wisdom and understanding; from everlasting to everlasting they have been Your companions.
2. You have imparted to man a measure of wisdom and understanding that by them he may walk in Your ways; for You alone, O Lord, are the One who gives and the One who takes away.
3. Let the man who desires wisdom humble himself before the Lord, and the man who seeks understanding study His precepts.
4. The Lord imparts wisdom and understanding to the humble but He hides it from the proud.
5. The heart of the humble trusts in the Lord but the heart of the proud lean on their own learning.
6. The humble are exalted in the way but the proud shall be brought low. The Lord opens the eyes of the lowly but He keeps shut the eyes of those who know all things.
7. The Lord knows that the thoughts of the proud are vain, but He delights in those who meditate upon His word.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
1. A covetous man gains great wealth laboring day and night but his wife is a stranger and his children say to their mother, “Is that man our father?”
2. A covetous woman gains great wealth laboring night and day but her husband does not know her and her children are neglected; they go astray and she says, “Why have my children gone astray?”
3. Those who labor to provide for their family eat their bread with joy but there is bitterness and resentment in the house of the covetous.
Chapter Twenty-Eight
1. As the sins of the father brings suffering upon his sons, so the daughters suffer because of a mother’s indiscretion.
2. As the ground brings forth weeds and thorns because of man’s sin, so the suffering of women is due to her disobedience.
3. As a mighty wind sweeps away the rich and the poor, so an earthquake swallows the wicked and the righteous.
4. A wicked man suffers and asks, “What have I done to deserve this?” But a righteous man examines his ways and draws near to God.
5. A godly man is disciplined by the Lord but the wicked shall all perish in their sins.
Chapter Twenty-Nine
1. Though it causes my body to be buffeted and though it cost me dear, I shall seek the truth until I find it.
2. For it is better to suffer in truth than in ignorance, and it is better to own the truth than all the kingdoms of the world; injustices and kingdoms shall perish but the truth shall bring everlasting joy and rewards.
3. The way of truth is a narrow road, but the ways of error are many broad roads. Many travel the broad roads of death but few walk the lonely road to life.
4. Let those who find the way of life rejoice and praise God who alone reveals the truth to those who seek it as they do precious rocks and metals.
5. But beware! For there are many who would lead you astray with enticing words of human wisdom.
6. Therefore, be diligent and do not let pride and lust deceive you.
7. Let the Law of God lead you in the way, let His precepts teach you the truth, and let His word guard your heart from perversity.
Chapter Thirty
1. My house shall rise before the Sun and praise You. My kin shall rest when the Sun is high and offer thanksgiving. My family shall gather together at the setting of the Sun to worship You.
2. For You alone, Lord our God, are worthy of all praise, thanksgiving, and worship. For You have created all things by the breath of Your mouth, You have given us all good things to sustain us, and You alone are holy, righteous, and just in all Your ways.
3. All the days of our lives we will worship the Lord our God. But the foolish man worships the works of his hands and leads his house to ruin.
Chapter Thirty-One
1. The tongue of a gossip and slanderer is a raging fire that feeds upon the misfortunes, misdeeds, and shortcomings of its neighbors.
2. It rages out of control to the left and to the right, upward and downward utterly consuming all that lies in its path. Its sparks fly outward in all directions, setting alight the bystander; it shows no mercy but its fierce heat totally consumes all within its reach.
3. And men labor in vain who seek to quench its flames and stand in its way while it rages; and they too are scorched by its fierce heat.
4. When its fuel is exhausted, its flames die down and its heat is dissipated; the earth lies scorched and smoking embers lie all around as a witness of its fierce wrath.
5. And as an army rejoices in the camp after a victory, so a gossip and a slanderer rejoices in the ruin of his neighbors and laughs at their distress.
6. As the stomach craves more food when it is empty, so a gossip and a slanderer anticipates the next morsel when his tongue is still. A hungry man seeks meat for his belly and a gossip seeks tasty morsels to digest in his most inward parts.
7. But the man who gossips has no reputation and a slanderer does not go unpunished; for his mind suffers many torments, and his evil passions will weaken his body and dry up his bones.
Chapter Thirty-Two
1. A man given to extremes is a danger to himself and others.
2. Anxiety and complacency leads to death and destruction. A man who trusts and fears the Lord will never die.
3. A greedy man brings trouble to his household, and a lazy woman is the shame of her children.
Chapter Thirty-Three
1. Do not lend money to a man who is addicted to wine because you are encouraging him to be lazy.
2. Do not accept charity from a lazy man because he will expect you to pay him back one hundred fold.
3. Borrow from a rich man and you become his slave. Lend to the poor and you become his keeper.
4. A foolish man spends more than he earns, and a covetous man borrows to increase his possessions.
5. A poor man who is wise will gain more than a rich man who is foolish.
6. Guard your heart against greed. Covetousness leads to bitterness and sorrow, but happy is the man who is content with his portion.
7. A rich man can fulfil all his heart’s desires. A content man already has his heart’s desires.
8. Greed makes people believe the most ridiculous things.
Chapter Thirty-Four
1. The unfaithful ridicule those who worship God, and unbelievers mock those who pray at the appointed times. The day is coming when God shall reward the faithful and repay the wicked.
2. Integrity and restraint are wisdom for the righteous but folly to the wicked. The day is coming when the wicked shall say, “How wise the righteous were to walk in integrity and restraint,” and the righteous shall say, “How foolish the wicked were to walk according to the corruptness of their hearts.”
3. A righteous man mourns over his sin but sinners delight in unrighteousness. The day is coming when the righteous shall be comforted and the wicked shall find no rest from their torment.
Chapter Thirty-Five
1. A nagging wife forces her husband into hiding and immoral women comfort him.
2. A complainer drives away his friends but men of violence seek his company.
3. An angry man has few friends but he is found and befriended by wicked men who need a fool to carry out their violent deeds.
4. The mouth speaks what is expected but God sees the desires of the heart.
